1. Framing: Before you experiment with your shots, get some understanding on the photography theories. You would have to know certain guidelines/rule for composition, point of interest you want to create, the subject/category your are interested about (Landscape, Nature, Wildlife, Abstract, Architecture, Macro)
2. Know your Camera: Your Camera Manual is the best guide. Initially understand the setting and features that your camera provides. Go through the settings regularly until you get used to it.
3. Experiment with you camera:
  • Practice taking pictures knowing your rules, practice with different setting like Increase/Decrease ISO, Aperture and shutter, and white balancing.
  • Try both fast and slow shutter speeds to see for yourself what the difference is
  • Change aperture values to get the depth in your composition
  • Try different position and angles
  • Zoom In, Zoom Out, Know your lens Focal Length
  • Know your background, avoid clutter as much as possible
  • Focus. Auto/Manual focusing. Always press the shutter button half way down to prefocus in Auto
  • Understanding Lighting. Know how lighting can affect your subject. Know your light ratios for metering
  • Camera Metering: Meter your exposure values (Manual Mode) try different Metering settings. Get your manual to know how to meter from your camera.
    Things you need to Have

    1. DSLR Camera (Nikon, Canon). Being a Nikon fan for today, I suggest Nikon D90, D5000 depending on affordability to begin with and explore your photography crunch for few years with it.
    2. Lens: basic kit lens Nikon 18-105mm OR I suggest Nikon 18-200mm(heavier) to begin with
    3. Tripod: Monfrotto
    4. Shutter Releaser: for Low light shooting on a tripod
    5. Battery Packs, having Extra Battery would be beneficial
    6. Memory Card: 2GB + 2GB individual cards
    7. UV filters for the lens, Polarized filter
    8. Simple cleaning utilities
    9. Bag Packs for your camera body and lens
